Signs of Spiritual Abuse
The signs of a toxic church environment are not always obvious. They’ll have found community, mentorship, and people who treat you like family. Many don’t recognize the signs until they are already either deeply involved or until after they’ve left. At Sullivan Counseling Collective, we specialize in helping people recover from spiritual abuse and religious trauma.
What Is Spiritual Abuse?
Spiritual abuse often leaves people with shame, guilt, fear, and confusion. If an individual leaves the toxic environment, they are then left completely isolated and without the community that they had come to depend on.
Common Signs of Spiritual Abuse
Here are some key signs of spiritual abuse:
Fear-Based Control – You are threatened with consequences to maintain obedience to a religious leader. Your faithfulness to God is put into question any time you question a leaders decisions.
Shaming and Guilt – You’re made to feel unworthy, sinful, or “less than” for your thoughts, feelings, or actions. Simply just existing as yourself leads to criticism.
Isolation from Family or Friends – Your leaders or community discourage relationships outside the group.
Suppression of Doubt – Questioning beliefs is met with harsh judgment. Your relationship with God is put into question.
Rigid Rules and Expectations – Strict codes of behavior regarding how you are supposed to act and dress.
Manipulation Using Scripture or Doctrine – Leaders are using scripture to maintain control over your life.
Excessive Control Over Life Choices – Decisions about education, career, relationships, or lifestyle are dictated by leaders.
Spiritual Gaslighting – You are told your feelings, perceptions, or experiences are false (in other words, you can be wrong- but the leader is never wrong).
Punishment for Leaving or Questioning – Leaving the group is not allowed and if you do- you are ostracized. You are also pressured to turn your back on anyone who does leave.
Emotional and Psychological Harm – You feel constant fear, anxiety, shame, or confusion about your identity.
If you identify with several of these experiences, it’s important to recognize that you are not alone, and what you experienced is not your fault. Healing from spiritual abuse is possible with the right support.
